This has certainly come a long way since since the last time I tried it, which was about 6 months ago. The main improvement is that it now supports protecting location sharing links with a password; that wasn't possible when I first tried it, which made it a no-go.
We're mostly using the Phonetrack / Nextcloud combination, since I already have a Nextcloud server up, but if you don't need a full-blown personal cloud and are only looking for a simple location sharing option, this is well worth keeping an eye on. It doesn't even require a database, and there is no complicated setup - just copy the server files to your document root directory and modify the config file according to your needs. No dedicated subdomain is necessary, either; it will work just fine from a folder under any domain, although this will make the sharing links longer. It does require Memcached or Redis, though.
(Not that anybody has great need for real-time location sharing at the moment... It's almost like the old days, when you didn't have to ask "Where are you?" when calling somebody.)
